As a member of a multi disciplined Engineering group my role in the Methods and Reliability Section was to provide Control and Power expertise to the department. I was also given the opportunity to deliver training lectures to new and existing refinery personnel on subjects such as ‘Instrumentation Appreciation’, ‘Electrical Awareness’, and ‘ATEX/DSEAR awareness’. Working within this role provided me with a more rounded knowledge of engineering as well as an overview of the activities carried out within other refinery departments.
Control And Power Technician
As part of the LOR control and power maintenance department I was required to maintain the refinery instrument and electrical systems to a high standard, observing comprehensive safety and Q.A. criteria. More specifically I was expected to calibrate, repair, configure, install and commission all aspects within the area of control and power, from various measuring and control elements, to the supervisory control systems employed at LOR. In addition to the practical aspects of the role my responsibilities also included the planning of work using the Refinery's integrated CMMS systems, effective communication with various departments at various levels, and low level system design. During periods of absence (or secondments) I was also called upon to assume the role as stand-in Control and Power Area Maintenance Engineer, which included one continuous spell of 6 months. The role of stand in Area Maintenance Engineer entailed attending operational meetings in order to discuss and prioritise work loads, co-ordinating between different departments, ensuring that the correct labour and materials are available for the daily work requirements, and carrying out risk assessments, etc. In more general terms I was also heavily involved with the development of new team members by offering both technical support as well as my experience.
