Profile bio

About Nigel Robinson

I am an experienced Editor-In-Chief with a successful history of working in the magazine and book publishing industries with an emphasis on LGBTQ+ issues and YA and genre fiction, as well as having managerial experience in the legal sector. I am skilled in Journalism, Copy Writing, Publicity, Advertising, Creative Writing, Team-Building, and Project and Data Management. I am a strong and passionate advocate of Plain English. Why waste time on a paragraph of jargon and elitist mumbo-jumbo, when a simple sentence will do? I am a strong professional with an international outlook and a BA focused on German and French from the University of Liverpool.I have worked in the LGBTQ+ print media since the 1990s, including as the Editor-in-Chief of Pride Life, the UK’s most widely distributed LGBTQ+ magazine title. I have also produced the official Pride in London guides, as well as the official magazine of Copenhagen Pride (World Pride) and Malta Pride (EuroPride). I am familiar with all aspects of the magazine process from commissioning, writing, designing and editing to negotiating contracts and liaising with advertising clients, distribution managers and printing houses. As Editor I built up a particularly good relationship with my journalists and writers, believing that it is always better and more rewarding to work as a team towards the same end, rather than as a “boss” and his/ her/ their employees. On a voluntary basis I was also the Editor of the Soho Clarion, the community magazine for London’s most vibrant district, and successfully changed the look of the magazine from a “parish magazine” to a professional glossy product.I have written over 70 published books, both fiction and non-fiction, largely for the Young Adult and Genre markets, and have worked as a freelance copy editor for several UK publishers. I am happy to provide a full list upon request.I have also written original novels and novelisations, based on the popular Doctor Who franchise, and licensed by the BBC, as well as several Doctor Who Audiobooks, published by Big Finish and licensed by the BBC. I have driven a Dalek.I also spent ten years in the high-pressure legal sector, working as Dispute Resolution Support Manager in the City for one of the world’s largest law firms. I used technology productively in the successful conduct of high-profile and international litigation cases as well as making presentations to partners, associates and trainees. I was known and appreciated for my can-do and no-nonsense attitude. I also hired, trained and managed a team of up to 20 paralegals.
