About Nigel Deshpande

A state registered Clinical Scientist in Medical Physics with over 30 years’ Radiation Oncology experience in the National Health Service and Industry. My clinical experience covers all aspects of running a radiotherapy physics service, dosimetry, quality assurance treatment planning and brachytherapy. I have commissioned linear accelerators and treatment planning systems, introduced new techniques (3D conformal radiotherapy and paediatric whole CNS) and led major service improvements to enhance patient care, e.g., the introduction of CT based virtual simulation and a fully networked department at the Royal Free, London. In industry, leading a team of clinical & technical specialists I oversaw the growth of the Philips Healthcare Radiation Oncology business so half of all UK departments used at least one solution from the portfolio. The role included upstream (research collaborations and pre-release testing) and downstream (tendering, training, support, project management) activities through a rapidly changing technical and clinical landscape encompassing the introduction of Intensity Modulation RT, automated contouring and planning, adaptive RT, MRI guided RT and Proton therapy. My passions are innovation, leveraging multi-disciplinary teams and constant learning to address one of societies great challenges, how to build a fit for purpose health system for the future.Oh, and I am a co-founder of SLANT Sustainable Technologies, a Bristol based start-up aiming to reduce short urban car journeys by changing the way you carry loads.
