Capital Strategies is the vehicle for my employee ownership research, development and policy advice.

I co-founded Co-operative Energy in 2010 with backing from Midcounties Co-operative, having identified the market opportunity for a consumer-owned supplier that could rebuild trust in an industry which had lost the confidence of many consumers. By its third year of trading, the business was generating revenues of £150 million and profits of £6 million and is on course to be the largest independent energy supplier in the UK.

Alongside work on the business plan for Co-operative Energy, I worked part time for EOA, the membership association for UK employee-owned businesses, developing and presenting policy proposals for the main political parties, including lobbying for tax reliefs to boost the employee ownership sector.

Equiniti, formerly Lloyds TSB Registrars, is a BPO company specialising in share registration, employee share plans, employee benefits administration, retail investor services and investment administration. My role was to accelerate the diversification started under Lloyds TSB ownership and to identify and implement bolt-on acquisitions.

As Products and Markets Director, my role was to manage the entire product range of this shareholder services business and to lead the diversification of the business into related areas such as HR services, employee benefits administration and retail investor services. The business was sold to private equity firm Advent International in 2007 and renamed Equiniti.

This was a new role at director level designed to focus on a key product category that needed investment to meet the challenge of globalisation.

myshares is a software and services provider to administrators of employee share plans in large public companies. I co-founded the company in 2000 with backing from 3i and outsourcing company Capita and, in 2001, sold the company to Capita.

I co-founded Capital Strategies as a corporate finance advisory firm in 1991, specialising in employee ownership transactions and M&A origination and execution for private and public companies. I left to start myshares, in which Capital Strategies retained a strategic stake.

The OR Group of NatWest was an internal management consultancy unit which worked on a wide variety of projects with executive-level sponsorship. Two of my projects were devising risk barometers to detect correlations and concentrations of risk that might impact the bank's capital adequacy, and creating a new segmentation of major corporate clients for relationship management and marketing purposes.
