About Nigel Smith
Impact and purpose have driven me since I turned away from the advertising industry (which I enjoyed, by the way). But for the past decade plus I’ve been applying my experience and drive to helping people and helping our home (Earth). In a path I didn’t expect this has led to me, a vegetarian, working with many cattle farmers and other less meaty food producers. It’s a fascinating space and exciting to be a part of building a sustainable and productive food system.

Communications And Engagement Manager - Change Team For Student Experience Program
The University of Sydney was implementing a wide ranging transition to achieve an outstanding student experience. As a member of the Change Team I was integral to the change process across all audiences in respect of change communications, but with a focus upon engaging our students. My strategies to bring students into the centre of change included co-developing workshops for discovery, ideation and co-design. I also built a core group of highly involved students to provide an ongoing sounding board and peer-channel for the program. In addition, managing overall student comms (working with the Marketing & Communications team) ensured that as improvements go live, our students and staff are kept informed of progress and provided with opportunities to feed back.Early achievements include:- Development of a trial “pop up” degree planning service to help new students receive guidance from experienced peers. I delivered this highly successful experience within three weeks of starting with the team. The key measure of success was eliminating any sense of not being comfortable with planning their degree selections from the 750 students visiting the pop up. This approach has now been adopted and adapted into a new business as usual offering for new students.- Scripting and producing (with an external supplier) a video explaining the complex work of the program, its achievements and its future deliverables and aspirational goals. This was achieved in a little over one week in response to an important internal communications opportunity.- Working across the program team to build a collaborative and coordinated way of working.
Marketing & Communications Specialist
Engaged with a variety of organisations either as a consultant or embedded resource. Roles have included:PwC's The Difference | Creative Comms - working with the national team to co-create a clearer value proposition; build capability around culture, experience and engagement; co-develop business development strategy and tools.Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL): Helped CISL and member banks with communications strategy, messaging and digital content for the Banking Environment Initiative. The initiative was approaching a major stakeholder event during which sensitive and certainly complex issues would become public. I developed the framework for immediate and medium-term communications, scenario planning and key messaging.; liaised with key stakeholder representatives and CISL Secretariat to build alignment.WWF-Australia: Researched and created a communications strategy, for approval by the Executive Team, concerning the WWF's future vision and strategy for marine conservation in Tasmania. The strategy addressed multiple-audience and stakeholder groups, core messaging and recommended communication mediums.
Engagement Manager - Sustainable Food And Sustainable Business
WWF-Australia (World Wide Fund for Nature) is Australia’s best known and most trusted environmental NGO, and a leading global brand in the category. The Sustainable Food team’s purpose is to change the way the worlds businesses and people produce and consume food in order to minimise land and habitat degradation. My cross-functional role in this team served as the bridge between expert conservation scientists, policy specialists, business partnership managers, and the marketing communications, media relations, and fundraising teams. The end result - strategies for engaging with varied audiences (internal, business, donors, political) to help achieve conservation and communications objectives. Some of my personal highlights included:- Issues-management, strategy and implementation through a period of intense pressure for the organisation- Leveraging partnerships with major corporates for the creation of shared value (in marketing and communications)- Developing a compelling story of Queensland beef farmers potential as the heroes of Great Barrier Reef conservation- Turning a complex project involving technology and tuna fishing into an attention grabbing story of blockchain, human rights and conservation that went around the world- Working every day with experts from a fascinating but complex field, to create clear and compelling messages for diverse audiences and media. On completion of my two-year contract I took a short sabbatical, travelling to many of the natural areas in Australia I had been working upon for the previous two years including Tasmania and outback Queensland.

Assisting the Director of this 25 year old NGO that leads the way on conservation and sustainable development in Namibia. My work here included: reviewing and creating web content for major projects; training staff in web and social media content creation (including establishing policies and process); refining the positioning of the organisation, and developing a core proposition for stakeholders and the private sector (assisted in securing N$200 000 – USD 20 000 - funding from Shell for a marine science and education programme); creating core brand standards and visual templates for all staff. This was a part-time role to fully utilise my time towards the end of my core assignment with AMICAALL. At this point, my AMICAALL role required less time as responsibilities were progressively transferred over to AMICAALL staff.
Program Management Mentor
Working in the international secretariat of AMICAALL to help improve HIV/Aids related outcomes at the local government level across five African nations. This executive level role encompassed a wide ranging strategic review and re-positioning of the international head office function, and of the role and function of the organisation as a whole. During my time at AMICAALL significant organisational challenges had to be addressed, involving rebuilding relationships with key stakeholders; proposing a radical new structure to ensure sustainability of the organisation; generating support for such proposals from a geographically distributed (five countries) management team. Approaching the end of the assignment, a structured transitional process was in place to a more sustainable and needs focused structure.I was engaged as a part of the capacity building AVID program: Australian Volunteers for International Development (funded by DFAT).
