As a court programs volunteer, I gained experience in court etiquette, interacting one on one with and interviewing those charged with petit larceny, and assisting with completion of OAR NOVA Shoplifting Prevention Program requirements such as work site location contacts and class facilitation. Additionally, I assisted supervisors with the Batterer’s Intervention Program clients. My tasks included conducting victim calls and interviews, taking notes on clients during classes, and logging those notes into our system. I also gained experience in analyzing and handling sensitive information such as client criminal records, PII, and contact information.

Interns at BII are assigned to the Intelligence Analysis Division and assist analysts in collecting, disseminating, and analyzing intelligence from Pennsylvania State Correctional Institutions, PA Parolees, and state-recognized security threat groups. Tasks include listening to and taking notes on inmate phone and video calls, messages, and financial transactions. This includes receiving training and experience in correctional systems such as CAPTOR, JPay, Securus, GTL/Viapath, DataIQ, and the Inmate Visitation System (IVS). BII interns also received opportunities to handle evidence processing, participate in inmate interviews, work with state and local law enforcement, and observe daily prison functions.

We are also required to do fast-paced, efficient group work reliant on reliability, time management, and adaptability. When interacting with customers, it is one of our top priorities to ensure polite, friendly, and helpful interactions and to maximize experiences for both the customer and other team members.

As puppy raisers and handlers at Susquehanna Service Dogs, volunteers were required to take care of, train, and observe potential future service dogs full-time as well as aid in the training of other potential service dogs and work with other volunteers and trainers.Some tasks involved in the training included full-time, around-the-clock care of puppies 3 months old or older, training of puppies 3 months old or older, commuting and transporting dogs to different locations for environmental exposure and training, and primary medical care for canines. Public relations work was also required in order to ensure an accurate representation of Susquehanna Service Dogs when volunteers train in public. Following COVID, we were also required to receive instruction both in-person and online.
