As a resident in Anaesthesiology and PhD candidate in Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine, I enthusiastically combine clinical work with research. Anybody involved in perioperative medicine can imagine how useful it would be to have a standardized data registration in place, combined with a biobank, to facilitate research questions relevant for the anaesthesiologist. As part of my PhD, I am the coordinating investigator of such a registry and biobank: the perioperative longitudinal study of complications and long-term outcomes (PLUTO) cohort. The goal of PLUTO is to better identify patients at risk for complications following surgery, and to identify these complications at an earlier stage to prevent deterioration. PLUTO is a rich resource that combines three things: standardized data registration, collection of samples, and the possibility to easily collect additional data. It therefore serves as a logistical framework for future research and collaborations. In addition to my clinical work and research, I am actively involved in education, amongst others as an advanced life support instructor. This offers me the opportunity to use and develop my communication skills on a different level, and keeps my clinical skills up-to-date. The coming years I want to continue to improve the PLUTO biobank and start new research projects and collaborations to improve perioperative patient care.
