I believe that every individual has something to contribute to the world. To me, architecture is art with a purpose, a tool for change and bettering the living conditions of families affected by social injustice and poverty. My dream is to be able to provide homes and schools for impoverished communities both in the U.S. and developing countries. My interests lie heavily in community activism and public-interest design. Architecture should be seen as progressive and not merely additive in order to advance the practice. My thesis was focused on re-imagining fluvial edges as thickened places of habitation sited in Colombia, which is prone to heavy seasonal floods. The intervention was designed to be a super-levee infrastructural system, one that existed on land, on the edge, and in the water. Not only to spread excess water out, but absorb it and capture it to release it later when necessary. It consists of water-adaptive architecture that is both site specific and user-accommodating. The outcome is a community that can better withstand flooding, recover quickly, and continue on with their daily lives while maintaining their respectable livelihoods.Reinforcing these ideals, my experience with volunteer work and involvement in non-profit activism lends itself to topics surrounding poverty and primary education in Nicaragua, promoting community college completion, Latina empowerment, and advocating the power of the Millennial generation. Many of these also involve working within leadership trainings, mentorship programs, and civic engagement. I look forward to sharing more about myself and what I may bring to the position of a design professional. I look forward to the any architectural endeavor that may further my career, enable me to grow and challenge myself as an individual. I am confident my skills will transfer and make an impact at any establishment.
