About Nik Roberts

Nik Roberts, PhD, is a full-time, tenured faculty member at Pennsylvania Western University, where he teaches courses in criminology, conflict resolution, and leadership studies. A sample of the courses he has taught as an assistant professor includes Correctional Systems (undergraduate), Research Methods (undergraduate, master's, and doctoral levels), White Collar Crime (undergraduate), Violence and the Media (undergraduate), Problems in Policing (undergraduate), Advanced Criminological Theories (master's), Sentinel Event Review (doctoral), International and Intercultural Conflict Resolution (master's), Conflict Resolution Applied Research Project (master's), and Leadership Studies (undergraduate).As a SME in qualitative research methods, Nik has served on approximately 23 completed doctoral dissertation committees, most often as a qualitative methodologist. He is the author of The Law Behind the Wall, published by Cognella Academic Publishing, and is co-authoring his 2nd textbook, Condemned, which focuses on wrongful convictions and the death penalty, with Anthony Papageorgiou, JD, DCJ.Nik maintains an active service record, having been appointed or elected to several department and university committees. These include serving on the Faculty Senate at Saybrook University and PennWest committees on faculty evaluation (both promotion and tenure), curriculum development, professional development funding, sabbaticals, Executive Council, Student Conduct, and as a Title IX Hearing Board Member.Before PennWest, Nik worked as a teacher and emergency responder with the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections, where he taught Adult Basic Education, Business Education, and Pathways to Success (a job readiness course) to inmates in maximum-security facilities. His expertise in corrections led him to serve on a statewide committee on solitary confinement policy, an initiative that ultimately led to the development of the state's "step down" procedures.In addition to his work in criminal justice and criminology, Nik has taught sociology and/or political science at Westmoreland County Community College, West Virginia Junior College, Ashford University, Southern New Hampshire University, and Strayer University. He occasionally co-teaches "Globalism and Power"--a doctoral course in the Department of Transformative Social Change at Saybrook--along with his former professor and dissertation chair, Dr. Marc Pilisuk.An honorably discharged veteran, Nik also enjoys playing bass in an indie rock band and being an AirBNB Superhost.
