Unlike most other journals, Current Opinion journals publish only invited reviews. In my role as the Theory and Simulation co-editor I would propose a topic for an issue, identify leaders in the field and solicit papers from them on relevant topics, review the papers and suggest corrections (if relevant), approve finalized manuscripts, and approve publication. Working closely with the professional journal staff, I make sure that all deadlines are met while maintaining the quality of the papers published.

Teaching: Taught all levels of science and engineering students. Courses ranged from introductory science (freshman chemistry) to advanced graduate special topics. Particular emphasis on (i) Mathematical methods in engineering (ii) Thermodynamics(iii) Design and properties of nano and bio materials Advising: Developed and advised the Chemical and Biological Engineering MSc program, including re-organization of the curriculum. Put a focus on addressing students’ needs by tailoring individual study plans, developing and pursuing career plans (for example, helping them find research projects or jobs in industry), etc.Recruitment, admission and enrollment management of the MS programOutreach liaison with local public high schools: Developed and managed outreach activities and collaborations between CBE and high-schools Research: Design and develop functional systems that allow targeted delivery of drugs or nutrients. For example, an implant that can release a consistent dose of anti-psychotics (for schizophrenia patients) over months-long periods. A nano-scale capsule that circulates in the bloodstreams and releases chemotherapy only when in a tumor. Gene carriers that introduce DNA or RNA to genetically defective cells.

Despite the fact that the numbers of women earning degrees in science and engineering has been slowly increasing, women’s participation in STEM fields remains well below that of men. Creating college environments that support women was identified as a key for better recruitment and retention of women in these fields. Increasing the numbers of women in senior leadership positions in academe can greatly affect student experience and improve recruitment and retention of women. ELATE at Drexel® was developed as a national leadership program whose to prepare senior women faculty in STEM fields to assume high-level positions within academic institutions. It was modeled on the long-running, highly successful ELAM® program for women in medicine, dentistry and public health. As a co-director, I served several roles in ELATE: (i) Developing and implementing the participant selection process, including review of all applicants and making the final admission decisions.(ii) Developing and supervising some of the training and mentoring sessions(iii) Organizing the graduation session (where participants present their work and planned career path)

As program director in The Division of Biological Infrastructure (DBI) I supervised several programs. In addition to interacting with potential and funded principal investigators, I(i) Revised the program descriptions to align with NSF’s goals, (ii) supervised the review process – including forming and facilitating merit review panels and ad-hoc reviews from experts in the field, (iii) considered the scientific, technical and programmatic –related merits of each proposal (iv) made funding recommendations based on the program goals, portfolio, and available budget(v) reviewed progress reports of funded projects, approved changes to budgets and/or additional fundingAlso, as a member of several NSF committees I participated in the development of new initiatives, and worked on interdisciplinary funding opportunities with colleagues in other divisions and other government agencies (such as NIH).
