I belong to the Tracked and Light Specialist Vehicle group. Our group is mainly concerned with the development of special vehicles, such as Bullet proof and Mine Protected Vehicles, and development of aggregates, such as Gearbox, Power Pack and Suspension, for tracked vehicles, such as T-72, T-90 and BMP Tanks. Our group is also responsible for the in-house design and development of Driveline aggregates for Technology/product innovation to address Defence Capability Gaps and Import substitution for cost reduction. As a project lead, my responsibilities during a project execution are: preparation of RFI (Request for Inquires) response (Compliance statement, Design conceptualization, Bill of Materials, discussion with costing and Finance department for Budget estimation and Interaction with Vendors), preparation of RFP (Request for Proposal) response (Technical response, discussion with potential Suppliers and budget requirements), Design and Drawing Finalization, response to customer queries, support to Sourcing for Supplier selection, Manufacturing and Assembly support, Internal testing, support for user trials, literature preparation and service support.1. Team Lead for the development of T-72 Tank Gearbox, which was earlier supplied by Russia, under the Make in India banner.2. Team Member of the project ‘Improved suspension for BMP-II Tank. Responsibility: Benchmarking of current BMP-II Tank Suspension at Ordnance Factory Medak. Work involves calibration fixturing in the tank, discussion with customer (Ordnance Factory Medak) about their queries and requirements and recording the desired values by conducting trials.3. Field visit to army cantonments and other customer locations for design verification, issue resolution, and service support.4. Lean Engineering for previously completed projects.5. Training to Indian Army Jawans about driveline components- its operation, servicing and overhauling for all newly inducted vehicle.

-As a GET at Ashok Leyland for one year, I was taken through classroom courses about Engines and other aggregates of the vehicle, on the industrial initiatives and finance.-OBTs on Leadership Building, Multi-tasking and Personality Building was appreciable.-With supplier visits to Exide batteries, JK tyres, Meritor Axles and Ojus power Solutions and Hands on session of Engine and aggregates dismantling and assembly made my concepts even more clear.-Had an intensive training on the Lean Six Sigma approach of problem solving and successfully completed project titled 'Thru pass % improvement in inline Engines' which had a recurring benefit of INR 18 lakhs to the Pantnagar plant of AL.-3 Months training in the R&D Department of the Defence Department of Ashok Leyland took me to the core of vehicle design.
