I work in the Mass Spectrometry Team at TBS as a Specialist following promotion from Research Scientist at the start of 2021. I currently primarially work with development and implementation of our MALDI based, automated immunoprecipitation assay for diagnosis and tracking of Multiple Myeloma and have begun working on our Water G2-XS LCMS-TOF system utilised in investigation of samples that require further analysis via intact or digestion protein analysis.In my day to day working I extensively use Bruker and Shimadzu MALDI instrumentation to analyse and interpret clinical samples as well as Waters LC-MS systems. This is often in conjunction with lab automation techniques including Tecan Fluent Systems (480/780) and STP Labtech Mosquito. I carry out both R&D type experiments and more GMP style work including experiments for verification of assays, as such I am familiar with both GLP and GMP requirements.I have designed and built custom Excel macros, Excel VBA Scripts and SAX BASIC (Bruker Variant) Scripts for sample information handling, data analysis and results processing, customising and developing these macros and scripts based on the needs of different R&D experiments and more routine analysis as required. I am also building and implementing a sample booking system using Microsoft PowerAutomate to incorporate functionality in Teams, Forms, Sharepoint and Planner.Responsibilities include training of colleagues in routine analysis, troubleshooting of instrumentation issues and abnormal results. Carrying out routine maintenance of instrumentation and associated paperwork.

I was a summer student in the CAF lab at the University of Reading where I predominantly used a HPLC-MS set-up to separate and analyse mixtures of oligosaccharides and related compounds including the products of the Formose reaction. This project gave me an invaluable oppotunity to learn about HPLC-MS method creation as I was both utilising existing HPLC-MS methods and creating new ones to carry out the work- Knowledge I later used in my final year project.Also during my time there I learned how to use the programs Bruker Hy-Star and EsquireControl. I gained sufficient knowledge of the programs to talk through a typical setup, explain the theory behind the methods and instruct colleagues in their use.Away from the HPLC-MS set-up I carried out some duties involving the NMR spectrometers throughout my placement such as aiding in the re-filling of the liquid nitrogen coolant and general maintenence.
