Voulenteering as a coach at my alma mater is extremely fulfilling. It provides me an opportunity to enguage in a competitive environment with kids who are experiencing similar things as I once did. I know that sharing my own experience and guiding the athletes towards a future that they want is impactful because I remember when people did the same for me. I also remember how difficult it was to find mentors at the transition period between high school and college. It brings me a lot of joy to be there for the athletes. My goals as an assistant Track Coach, is not only to reduce times, or increase distances in competitive events, but to improve the physical and mental well-being of all of the athletes. This is accomplish through hard physical training of course, but primarily through the creation of a trusting mentor relationship with the athletes.As a friend explains why teachers and coaches do what they do: invest in the kids, it is always worth it.
