I am a recent graduate who double majored in Ecology and Evolution, and Statistics and Data Science at the University of California, Santa Barbara. I have enjoyed getting to study parasites, cell physiology, machine learning, stochastic processes, and more through these two majors.During the summer of 2023, I got to work full time under the Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship (SULI) Program through the Department of Energy hosted at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) in Golden, Colorado. In this project I was teamed up with a full time scientist and got to contribute to projects that he was working on. I worked to improve an algorithm that quantified losses due to soiling, which is when dust accumulates on a solar panel. I then tested this algorithm against other algorithms to see which performed the best at quantifying soiling losses. The internship program included professional development that involved writing a research paper summarizing what work we had done as well as giving a poster presentation.After finishing the SULI program I was invited by my mentor to continue to work on the project part time during the school year. We are currently working to improve a synthetic data set that the algorithms are tested on. This synthetic data has a true value so we know how well the algorithms are doing. We are working to publish a paper that recommends which algorithm works best for quantifying soiling losses.I am also working on the publication of a paper on future agricultural abandonment using geospatial data in the Southeast United States through a fellowship with the Bren School of Environmental Science and Management and Conservation International (CI). My team and I studied how different future climate projections will affect how fragmented agriculture land is and how this will affect connectivity between different species.As we work to finish up this publication, my team has also started a new project with Bren School and CI studying elephant conflicts in Namibia and how current high-use corridors will shift due to climate change. As these corridors shift new areas will be important conflict areas. By working with local partners in Namibia, our team can get access to insight and data that is not widely available. We are working towards an eventual publication in this area.
