As a Paraeducator for the Special Education program at Stanley Middle school, I work closely with students, teachers, and education specialists toward the goal of realizing each students Individualized education plan (IEP). I play a vital role as the link between the student, their case manager, and the day to day application and evaluation of the IEP. My job involves aiding in the care and cultivation of our student's confidence, knowledge, and behavior. I help students understand and accomplish lesson plans and learning goals, develop essential communication skills, and facilitate positive social environments that lead to behavioral and academic growth.

In partnership with Sustainable Business Chair, Professor Jay Friedlander I co-created an “open-source” 12-week college level course that engages students with a solutions-based approach to enterprise creation. The course was published by the Solutions Journalism Network and is freely accessible. My work involved researching, reviewing, and synthesizing ten years of course material, turning it into a compelling and flexible college-level course to be used by educators.

Assisted five interdisciplinary business teams through initial development and piloting of sustainable enterprises. This culminated in teams giving successful pitches in which the majority received seed funding, office space, and mentorship. Throughout the course, I advised and tutored individuals and teams on a regular basis, as well as provided administrative and logistical support to the professor. I met often with the Sustainable Business Chair, providing updates on tutoring sessions and insight’s into each team. My responsibilities included supporting students with research & resources, case-study preparation, financial planning, and feedback on presentations and course assessments.

Awarded highly selective internship to work in environmental communications & marketing office for education & research center in Acadia National Park. As an Acadia Scholar, I leveraged my prior experiences conducting ecological fieldwork, filmmaking, and journalism to produce engaging and informative content for print and digital platforms while developing new skills in graphic and web design. I worked regularly across departmental lines and alongside scientists, educators, program participants, and park officials. I would make frequent excursions into the field to document and support ecological research efforts, citizen science programming, and organizational workshops and events.

I pursued an independent study in journalism with veteran journalist, Earl Brechlin who is the founding editor for the MDI Islander newspaper. Over the course of the season, I wrote various investigative, biographical, and profile articles focused on the local community which appeared in weekly print and digital issues. I developed journalistic skills in interviewing, writing, and editing, as well as developing an acumen for connecting with people, asking informed questions, and getting at the ‘heart’ of a story.

Alewife Herring are anadromous fish that run in great numbers every spring. These fish are historically and ecologically significant in Maine, providing a food source for many human and animal communities. As a data analyst, I monitored and recorded data on Alewife populations as they made their way through rivers and streams. I was responsible for monitoring four sites across northern Maine that were utilizing underwater camera systems. My work culminated in an official estimate of over 65,000 Alewives, providing important information to conservation organizations and agencies, and ultimately supporting statewide findings that Alewife populations are increasing.

Huntingdon, Pennslyvania

Conducted rigorous ecological fieldwork and laboratory analysis with a team of undergraduate researchers and a lead investigator on several grant-funded stream ecology and eco-toxicity projects. Our research focused on assessing the health of stream ecosystems with a specific focus on fish assemblages in central and northwestern Pennsylvania watersheds. We also looked at the impacts natural gas extraction and abandoned mine drainage are having on these vital ecosystems. Sinop, Turkey

As part of an international archaeological collaboration between US, UK, & Turkish institutions and organizations, I worked alongside an interdisciplinary team of archeologists and researchers, becoming the first modern team to excavate the hellensitic fortifications surrounding the city of Sinop. I utilized my video production skills to interview researchers and videotape our process and progress. In addition, I developed new skills through rigorous field and analytical work. This included archeological excavation of multiple sites along the ancient fortification, processing and photographing special artifacts such as bronze age ceramics and roman siege equipment, as well as sketching the layers of structural features in each trench in order to match historic events within the context of the geologic record.
