I’m Tyler Shannon. I’m a dad, a husband, a friend, & a proud CSU Ram alum. I'm a person who brings great passion, positive spirit, competition, and joy to every day. Those things make me a great safety professional.I believe people don't come to work to get hurt. They're a product of the system. A product of having to put food on their tables. A product of the pressures of a business trying to be successful. A product of leaders who have dozens of people, projects, and programs to worry about. Most people just want to do better and be better, so if you engage them the right way by coaching them to empower improvement, they'll build a safety culture that they're passionate about.We all grow up differently. There's no one who learns and develops the same as someone else. But what we all are, is human. Humans make mistakes. It's part of what makes us who we are. That's why the key to making lasting cultural changes towards a safe working environment, is to start accepting the reality that you have to think ahead to get ahead. Thinking ahead means putting money where the dangers are. It means accepting the fact that no one knows the dangers employees deal with, better than them. It means appreciating courageous conversations, rewarding action, and showing (not just saying) employees that you care about their safety. I believe the motto of "zero incidents" hides the reality of the working environment most employees live with. There's no such thing as zero incidents. There's just zero people reporting them. Incidents happen all the time. But fear of losing a bonus, breaking a 0 days of lost-time trend, etc., reduces a company's ability to truly learn and truly support improvement. To me, that's not acceptable. I want people reporting incidents. I need them reporting them. That's how I see what's really going on. That's how a Supervisor or Manager learns the true trials and tribulations of the real world their employees live in. It's how you get ahead of a catastrophe before it happens. Give me data and give me employees that want to see their work environment better for themselves and their teams. That's how we get better. OSHA doesn't govern that. Passion for safety has to be engrained.The great thing is that the majority of businesses do care, some just don't show it well. Engineering controls are better than ever and designed in upfront. PPE is more comfortable and practical than ever. Training is advanced. Putting it all together, to make safety excellence, is what I'm good at. Humans make mistakes. Let's prevent them!
