The job involved learning how a manufacturing line works and understanding the role of a machine shop in the ICE value chain. Understand the auto ancillary industry.Identified a key problem/bottleneck in the manufacturing process - After the evening tea break, 5-6 workers and 3-4 supervisory would sit on a huge table with a go/no-go gauge and test all expansion plugs machined in that day. Lossing about 3-man days' worth of hours with a minimal gain in efficiency of quality control.Begin ideating on how this could be solved or reduced the time to perform the task. Listing multiple ideas around the go/no-go gauge. But one day found inspiration while watching Nat. Geo on of Coca-cola manufacturing plant, which showed used machine vision system to perform quality control on Tin-can.Started researching possible ways to use machine vision technology to check the dimensions of expansion plugs. Identified and meet vendors who could supply and set up the camera system, and selected a vendor of Cognex systems.The vendor helped us perform tests on the vision camera system for expansion plugs. Designed the plug feeding and rejection systems along with computing and operating procedures.Calculated the ROI of using the above system, which ranged from 6 months to 1 year. The owner of the shop requested us to share and present our report. They were eager to implement our suggested solutions.
