Sipping hot tea while at the controls of a ‘70s era helicopter may not sound like the typical beginning of a successful tea company. Sure, tea helps to battle northern Canada's frigid temperatures, but what it really did was warm me to the idea of building a tea product that would delight customers as much as it did for me. So, when I wasn’t flying crews to oil and gas sites or weaving around fog banks, I planned the beginnings of my tea shop. And while flying taught me how to make the right judgement calls in high-pressure scenarios and with limited information, the only way to scratch an entrepreneur’s itch is to go out there and create something.I decided to start, operate, and eventually sell a brick-and-mortar tea retailer while studying Information Technology management at UBC. I saw first-hand which business metrics really mattered and how operations, accounting, technology and more must align to drive a retail strategy. I analyzed business processes at my tea shop that could be tweaked so they ran a little better, a little more often. This, in turn, put great tea and a broad smile on every single customer who walked through my doors. Consulting with other unique foodservice companies on their tea retail strategy made me quickly understand their needs, and speak to them in a language that they understood. The learning curve was steep and fast, but I loved every second of it.Now, I leverage my hard-won business acumen, analytical, and communication skills as a Business Intelligence Consultant. I identify and solve the challenges that HR organizations have when grappling with their data and seek to bring that same warm delight to their users. To me, being a great consultant, project manager, or business analyst is about authentically evangelizing a vision while still being flexible enough to reach a collaborative agreement. Coupled with my background as a certified Toastmaster and my ever-present energy and positivity, I thrive in client-facing roles and love a challenge.
