I have benefitted from a Pratt Institute Industrial Design curriculum that was led by mentors Alexander Kostellow and Rowena Reed, who were contributing founders of the profession. When, entering the field to apply the craft, I was also fortunate to work with the most advanced research teams at General Motors for some 13+ years—first at GM Styling (Research Studio), to design Motorama concept cars (holding the design patent for the Firebird III) under leadership of the legendary Harley J Earl, then at the GM Defense Research Laboratories, designing lunar roving vehicles and hardware that rests on the moon today. This period established a design foundation for working on the leading edge of technology. The next 32 years matured in the application of those skills within aerospace specialist and teaming type environments. The genre included industrial design of aircraft interiors, mass transportation in transit bus and rail systems, military and commercial advanced marine craft (Surface Effect Ships, SWATH and Hovercraft), man-machine /crew and aircraft engine nacelle and thrust reverser systems. This period also included 10 years as a Design-To-Cost group engineer, leading an engineering team to reduce manufacturing costs; also represented Rohr for Risk Management of the Thermal Protection System on the X-33 program (on the Lockheed-Martin Skunkworks team). Semi-retired, I returned in a part time role to Rohr/Goodrich Aerostructures/UTC (/merger/acquisition) as a contractor for an additional 15 years in R&D Advanced Design. The primary activity in this last phase was IP protection, documentation and identification/projection of future technology directions. 4 Design and 8 Utility Patents have been issued over this span and 13 Utility Patents are pending.
