We are accelerating through technology disruptions at a terrifying speed. Artificial intelligence, machine learning, robotics, distributed ledgers, epigenetics, 3D printing, nanotech, and many others. Surrounding this tech tsunami we find ourselves amid a growing climate crisis, fueling the distortions of reality through social media, miring our future in populist politics, and failing to eradicate social inequity. For as much as we continue to try to box and label life, the law of accelerated returns continues unabated, surrounding us with more complexity each day.Lost in all this is the cognitive thinker, always left wondering if the map is really the territory. The mental discipline of evaluating surrounding systems, free of bias and with a plurality of perspectives, is absent in today's organization. We continue stubbornly to hack away at problems by trying to reduce them to their smallest parts, and in a vain attempt to understand how the 'clocks' work.We have entered the age of the cognitive organization, where the essential skills are critical thinking and problem dissolution. Skills that have been precisely designed to not emerge throughout our evolution because they detracted from our survival. Now they have become a key component of the critical toolset for modern digital organizations to thrive. The first step is to recognize complexity for its inherent unpredictability and emergent properties. The second step is to leverage this truth into an opportunity to promote frequent change. The third step is to listen to the feedback the system provides and to react appropriately. The days of silver bullets, cookbooks, prescriptive frameworks, and corporate strategy are done. These will remain museum pieces of our older cognitive selves as we transition towards the discipline of thought. This is not a popular doctrine, but it has never been more necessary. “Problems cannot be solved with the same mindset that created them.” - Albert Einstein
