Thesis work involved characterizing the physical properties of sediments in the initial deformation zone of a subduction megathrust off the coast of southwest Japan. Using logging and core measurements, the sediment physical properties data from a number of drilling sites was analyzed to developed a model of how compressional velocity correlates to porosity. This model was then used to convert seismic velocity data to porosity over a large section of the subduction zone.
