CtoImagini Aug 2007 - May 2008Imagini uses images (instead of text-based) answers to capture users’ visual (rather than linguistic) preferences; it includes a complex reporting system to visualize survey results. The concept has evolved into a successful social networking concept and an online product suggestion recommendation and customer survey tool.- Responsible for the technical strategy of the company from inception, initially under the auspices of blueorange.- Later took on full-time role as CTO, transitioning the company from contract-based development to a mainly internal development team of 14 developers and advocating and implementing a move to agile development methodologies away from a failing waterfall model.- Responsible for technical strategy, including the development of a sizeable web-scale architecture and the configuration and maintenance of a forty-server infrastructure spread over four locations.- Before joining as CTO and working as a consulting architect I developed an ESB-based strategy and innovative clustering and matching algorithms for Imagini’s unique problem of quickly ranking ‘closeness’ of visual responses across respondents.

CtoVielife Apr 2000 - Aug 2001London, Gbvielife operates a complex online corporate health and wellbeing portal which is sold to large corporate clients and health insurers as a way of monitoring and improving the health of staff or insured lives. vielife was acquired by CIGNA in 2006.- Initially led development of a rapid Python reimplementation of the company’s core product, an online corporate health and wellbeing system, which was failing due to scaling issues.- Later responsible for leading a £3M Java-based development project to build the next generation of the company’s core product. This included an intensive design phase designed to involve the entire company and later leading development teams in the UK and India to implement the system using Java on Microsoft platforms. -
CtoEncyclomedica Ltd. Feb 1999 - Apr 2000Encyclomedica recruited a large number of medical experts to produce a unique three-tier medical information resource; the medical information was syndicated to many different media, requiring high-quality output to be produced from a single source. Encyclomedica was acquired by vielife in 2000.- Responsible for the development of a base XML standard (based on DocBook) for Encyclomedica’s unique information resources as well as a set of editing tools.- Responsible for developing a content database and workflow engine (implemented in Java and Python) for managing the complex editing and approval process.- Responsible for creating output engines for producing high-quality output for different media from Encyclomedica’s source XML (web, print, IDTV, client-specific XML).
