I have been closely involved in analysing production methods to make processes faster, more efficient and leaner in a production environment. This has involved time and motion studies on production methods and techniques, as well as constructing training for these processes. This has given me the invaluable experience of understanding daily processes in production, analysing them, and coming up with creative ideas of how to make them better and more efficient from both a management perspective and from the shop floor. To undertake the research needed to complete my dissertation, I was selected to be in Prof. Jeremy Lakey's lab on a ten week placement. The project I was involved in, and subsequently wrote my dissertation on, was the protein engineering of a protein produced by the Black Death bacterium Yersinia pestis, which was expressed in E. coli. Engineering the expressed protein allowed deviation from it's wild type properties, and addition of novel ones. To do this I used several plasmid… Show more To undertake the research needed to complete my dissertation, I was selected to be in Prof. Jeremy Lakey's lab on a ten week placement. The project I was involved in, and subsequently wrote my dissertation on, was the protein engineering of a protein produced by the Black Death bacterium Yersinia pestis, which was expressed in E. coli. Engineering the expressed protein allowed deviation from it's wild type properties, and addition of novel ones. To do this I used several plasmid editing techniques to change the genetic code and hence the protein construction from the component amino acids. It was great to have experience in a working lab at one of the leading research initiations in the UK, and come out with a successfully edited protein from my own experiments. It also taught me to be patient and learn from experiments that weren't successful, and enjoy the excitement when they did. After completing my lab placement, I wrote my dissertation (in a lab report style) on my experiments, findings, and wider implications in which I gained an upper second mark. I also gave presentations to my lab, examiners and peers communicating an outline of my work. Show less
