In addition to my previous duties as a Health Research Assistant at UK Biobank, this role encompasses further responsibilities related to the on-site laboratory and the coordination of its daily activities. Quality control in the laboratory is paramount for ensuring sample quality and integrity. My responsibilities include monitoring the temperatures of the laboratory and its fridges/freezers, as well as conducting annual temperature mapping. I manage the inventory to ensure all equipment is adequately stocked and that laboratory instruments are within their calibration or validation periods. I either perform these internally or arrange for external services when required. As the principal point of contact at the Reading site for the core laboratory team, I participate in laboratory operations meetings for updates regarding key project indicators and am responsible for ensuring their delivery by my team. Furthermore, I oversee the training matrices for the laboratory competencies of my team, I deliver training to existing and new staff, and educate and ensure adherence to laboratory processes, such as PPE and waste management.

The primary duties of this position encompassed the collection of biological samples and data, processing of samples in the on-site laboratory, equipment quality control and maintenance, and adherence to information governance protocols to safeguard participant welfare and confidentiality. All procedures were conducted in compliance with Standard Operating Procedures and the Human Tissue Act. Biological samples were obtained through venepuncture, and a range of measurement and interview techniques were employed to gather additional data from participants.
