The advice, “Do what you love,” is often given to those who are struggling to choose a career path. In my experience, this statement is over simplified, leading many to flounder as they search for the industry or occupation that they love. My advice? Figure out what you’re good at and hone your skills. If you can simultaneously find people who share your values and motivate and support you, you’ll be well on your way to a successful and fulfilling career. I am a textbook example of this. Throughout my career I’ve explored many different fields: planetarium director in a small museum, membership coordinator for a non-profit newsroom, and social media specialist for a credit union. Looking at my career through the lens of “do what you love” yields no result. Instead, I’ve spent years honing what I’m good at, communication. This could be teaching all ages the wonders of the cosmos, extolling the values of member supported journalism, or encouraging reinvestment in the local economy through local banking. Each of these jobs has taught me invaluable lessons in effective communication that make me a better employee and leader in the workplace. My Vermont values keep me grounded and my colleagues inspire me every day. I’m driven by working with and for others and strive to create a better life for myself and those around me. When I’m happiest, I’m working at a faster-than-average pace, attentive to details, but always looking to the future. I stop moving only long enough to reflect on how to improve. My sense of urgency and duty combine to make me actively concerned about timeliness, as well as correctness, of everything I do. My specialties include the nuts and bolts of social media marketing, strategy development, inbound marketing, content creation, photography, videography, and email marketing. Because of my focus on communications and interpersonal relationships, I am an expert in customer relations, meeting facilitation, mentoring, public speaking, and project management (Certified ScrumMaster).
