  • New Citizenship Project
    Senior Strategist & Research Director
New Citizenship Project Sep 2019 - Present
    West Country, United Kingdom
Working within a highly collaborative environment, I act as strategic lead for projects that help organisations build participatory strategies, cultures and activities, in line with New Citizen Project's mission of building a more participatory society. This typically includes project strategy and planning, desk research and stakeholder interviews, workshop design and facilitation, interpreting and analysing workshop outputs and other data, and drafting key findings and strategic recommendations. I also help organisations to prototype new participation opportunities.Client projects include Co-op Group, National Autistic Society, Bureau Local, Historic England, RSPB, Kirklees Council, Parkinson's UK, COOK Foods, and others. I led the research strategy and workshop design of New Citizen Project's "#CouncilCulture" collaborative innovation project, bringing together three local authorities for a series of four workshops over 12 months to experiment with our "Narratives, Rituals & Beacons" model of cultural change, to craft cultural interventions that will support more participatory ways of working (report due late 2024)I also support New Citizen Project's deliberative democracy projects through research strategy and data analysis, including analysing a 20K+ response dataset from the mass engagement "National Conversation" element of the People's Plan for Nature (commissioned by National Trust, the RSPB and WWF), and leading the drafting, development and editing of New Citizen Project's RAPID Democracy report.Latterly, my role has included a renewed emphasis on developing the consultancy's thinking and practice around inclusive research encounters, co-research and collective knowledge building. More generally, I have made important contributions to the refinement of New Citizen Project's core tools and thinking by holding space for internal reflection and iteration, and adapting and communicating tools and thinking in new contexts.

  • Big Bath City Bid

I played a pivotal role in the "Big Bath City Bid", a community share offer that successfully raised £365,000 towards taking Bath City FC into community ownership. As Secretary of the Bath City Supporters Society, I led the early research, development and communication for the share offer, and later worked within a small team to develop a common strategy and deliver the project. I also developed partnerships with Bath Spa University, local political parties & 38 Degrees to support the campaign, plus a film screening and art exhibition in partnership with Pop Up Docs and local businesses.Since Bath City FC became community-owned, attendances have almost doubled, a wealth of local volunteer talent has been unlocked, and new commercial and charitable partnerships have been forged.(NB this was an unpaid role, but it definitely felt like a full-time job!)
