About Oliver Cox

I am Head of Academic Partnerships at the V&A, where I am responsible for leading on the strategic development of new academic partnerships that build on the V&A’s track record in innovative, interdisciplinary teaching and research. I joined the V&A from the University of Oxford where I was Heritage Engagement Fellow and Co-Lead of the Oxford University Heritage Network responsible for the University’s research and engagement projects with partners in the UK and international heritage sector. I am a historian by training, and received my undergraduate, masters and doctoral degrees from the University of Oxford. My recent publications include contributions to The Country House: Past, Present and Future, Sport and Leisure in the Irish and British Country House, along with journal articles exploring the politics of horseracing in eighteenth-century Britain, the importance of Jewish histories to country house studies, and the challenges of interpreting eighteenth-century spaces for twenty-first century visitors. I also write regularly for Apollo. Outside of the V&A I am a Trustee of the Churches Conservation Trust and University College Oxford Old Members Trust. I previously sat on Arts Council England’s Designation Panel, acted as a Trustee for the Walpole Society and Compton Verney House Charity, chaired The Heritage Alliance’s Digital Learning and Skills Advisory Group, and was a member of the ‘The Devonshire Inheritance: Unlocking the Chatsworth family papers’ Advisory Group for the Chatsworth House Trust.

Not only does conversation about artworks make the museum experience more enjoyable for visitors, but research shows that it also makes the artworks more memorable. Our conversation prompts mould visitors experiences, brings them closer together, and highlights elements of the collection. We have worked in the Ashmolean Museum, Waddesdon Manor, and are currently working alongside the Pitt Rivers Museum and The Natural History Museum in Oxford, with guides launched in early November.
