About Olivia De Goede

I’m driven by sharing knowledge and learning from others. I love to work in teams with diverse experience to build new connections and tackle hard problems from many angles!My major strengths are my genomics and bioinformatics expertise and my experience in collaborative, interdisciplinary research. In my work, my goal is to translate research discoveries into practical changes in how we understand health and disease.Some of my favourite work experiences have been:● Being introduced to R during my Master’s. This completely changed my career path by bringing me into the world of bioinformatics and unlocking my passion for computational biology and data visualization.● Taking charge of a large consortium research project during my PhD. This was my first time leading a project that involved many other trainees and collaborating labs. The experience taught me valuable lessons on project management, experiment design, and bouncing back from failure, and ended happily with a publication in Cell.● Every chance I’ve had to plot data and make infographics. I love to experiment with the best way of displaying data to get my message across, and can get lost playing on Illustrator for hours!● Building an “ancient DNA” science activity for The Tech in San Jose. This has been my favourite sci-comm experience to date; I had the best time testing out new approaches to turn a complex topic like DNA sequencing into a fun, approachable, and engaging activity.● Project meetings with my research supervisors and labmates to brainstorm new experiments. I love the sense of possibility in those meetings (and of course, getting to sketch out ideas on whiteboards and graph paper)!

My PhD research focused on an often-overlooked group of genes called long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) genes. There is a lack of interest in these genes because they don’t encode proteins; this makes it difficult to determine what a given lncRNA gene’s function is, or whether it even has a function at all. I used computational genomics to profile lncRNA.
