I was accepted into Penn State as an expected Biomedical Engineering Student. After one semester in school, I switched to Nuclear Engineering. I was walking in blind with no prior knowledge about anything in the field, but switched after learning about the production of radioisotopes for medicinal uses. I was hooked and wanted to know more. I didn’t realize how little I knew and still don’t know, and that’s why I continue to love the Nuclear Industry and advocate for it. There is constantly so much to learn. All the work being done to further nuclear power, nuclear medicine, space travel, and everything else so innovative and cool, yet so little is known in the general public. Misconceptions and stereotypes are still in the minds of society, and I think it’s about time to make this information available and revamp the idea of nuclear for all generations. My first “engineering” job was as a Make Space Assistant for an entry level Engineering Design course at Penn State. My purpose and job was the help and give input to students as they were first being introduced to the engineering design process through methods such as stakeholder engagement, criteria development, research, technical drawings, prototyping, modeling in Solidworks, working in teams, and presenting these methods clearly to an audience. I myself needed to be proficient in these skills and familiar in order to create an environment of growth and guidance to my students. My first internship was held with the NRC during the times of Covid virtually. I worked with the Medical Branch in King of Prussia. Through this experience, I started to truly learn the basics and depth of documentation, guidelines, and communication that are needed in order for these companies and practices running as safely and efficiently as possible. I was able to go on a few inspections where I was able to see examples of a well-organized practice and one not as organized, and how this reflected in their business and the relationship held with the NRC.My most recent internship that shifted into a part time job and soon into a full time position is with BWXT AT. Within the systems engineering team, I have worked on developing document trees to interconnect numerous types of documents to each other, BOMs and their connected documentations, and various other spreadsheets to better show the relationships between different areas of a project in one location.
