I feel called to help people. I believe knowledge opens the door to opportunities, so I moved across the country and started my career as an educator during the COVID-19 pandemic with Teach For America. Personally, being a high school teacher taught me how to clarify key points, ask engaging questions, and develop problem-solving skills. Nonetheless, I joined TFA to make an impact, and TFA equipped me to advocate for educational equity through solutions-oriented, restorative, and trauma-informed practices. Teaching mathematics (virtually and in person) was a vehicle through which I was able to love and empower adolescents.I was thrilled to return to Joy El despite stepping into a role vastly different than teaching. As a program director, my primary responsibility was event planning for the non-profit's 17 programmed weekend/ weeklong events. I developed each theme, planned the schedule, recruited and hosted speakers and musicians, hired and trained college-aged summer staff for 1700+ registered campers, supervised and equipped the summer leadership team, communicated with campers and parents/guardians, ran the events, and debriefed the team to identify areas of improvement. Behind the scenes, I executed administrative tasks and collaborated with the year-round team to coordinate camp operations. Overall, my job was to connect everything to our mission to provide opportunities for people to experience life-change through personal encounters with God. I gained so many practical skills from this position, and I loved seeing the staff grow and develop, but my greatest lesson was the significance of communication. Communication is crucial for a team’s success. Effective communication includes going up to your supervisor, across to peers, and down to those you supervise. Communication must be timely and ongoing so everyone is moving in the same direction toward the common goal.Throughout my experiences, I have been refining my calling. While I still seek to help people, I have a greater understanding of how. I have learned more about my strengths: analytical, integrity, responsibility, and grit. I long to utilize them to help people do more than pass a test or make a memory. I long to help people by empowering them to grow--in knowledge, courage, independence, character, leadership, etc. Furthermore, I hope that the impact is multiplied as they go on to impact others.
