About Olivia Irwin

I'm a senior at the University of Washington in the Interdisciplinary Honors program, having entered school two years early through the UW Academy at the Robinson Center for Young Scholars. Before I started college, I went to Roosevelt High School in Seattle, where I participated in the Robotics club and won several coding competitions (and our school's first CS trophy!) with a couple of my friends. I'm currently pursuing a double degree in English and HCDE (Human-Centered Design and Engineering); I've always felt an equal pull towards reading/writing and technology/design, so although it might seem like a strange combination, I think it fits me perfectly. Right now, I work as a writing adviser at the UW's CLUE Writing Center, open every school-night evening from 7pm to midnight about three nights every week; it's an awesome job, and allows me to help people improve at writing and indulge in being a total night owl at the same time! When I'm not working or taking as many classes as I can reasonably pack into a quarter, my hobbies include playing video games, reading, writing, and textile arts (knitting and crocheting!). Someday, I'd love to be involved in making video games--I attend PAX Prime every year, and I've been to four StudentRND CodeDays (24-hour events where you attempt to make an app or a game with a team of up to eight other people) as both a coder and a level designer. I like to stay busy!

In many ways, it's the best job I could have hoped for; I get a good excuse to stay up late and I get to help people improve their writing, both of which I already spend quite a bit of time doing regardless! (And, it's also worth noting that I get the exciting opportunity to read about some really interesting content from a wide variety of classes, many of which I wouldn't otherwise have time to take or even know about at all!) Starting in July of 2014 and ending on Christmas Eve that same year, I worked as a Sales Associate at Brookstone, a specialty/novelty retail store, in Northgate Mall. As well as six months of highly sales-focused retail experience, I gained from that position several good friends, a vastly improved resilience for handling the general public in a professional manner, and the ability to very effectively and politely kick teenagers out of multi-thousand dollar massage chairs
