After a career at the criminal bar, I retrained in professional pâtisserie and butchery. Since then, I have been writing about food in the form of journalism, memoir, cookery, reviews, research, and history.I wrote A Half Baked Idea, which won the Fortnum & Mason Food and Drink Award, and Butter: A Celebration, which Nigella Lawson called ‘her dream book.’I write for the Financial Times, delicious, the Telegraph, the Guardian, Slightly Foxed, TLS, the Times, and Waitrose magazine. In 2020, I was named the Guild of Food Writers Food Writer of the Year.I am the Spectator’s cookery columnist and present their podcast, Table Talk, and write their food and drink newsletter, The Take Away.As a freelance consultant, I help clients in the food industry make their words work harder for them, from menu and packaging copy, to launch strategy and tone of voice development.

I run FEAST, catering high-end weddings, cooking for high-profile private clients, hosting themed supperclubs, and everything in-between.On maternity leave until September 2024
