Profile bio

About Olivia Ryder, Ph.D.

I am an Atmospheric Scientist in the Data Sciences department and the Program Manager of Sonoma Technology’s educational program, Kids Making Sense. I have over a decade of experience analyzing atmospheric chemistry. My current projects include analyzing ambient data for toxic metals as part of community air monitoring efforts, conducting source apportionment assessments, and working with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to develop best practices guides for mitigating air pollution in (1) near-road environments, and (2) indoor environments during smoke events. I have a strong interest in communicating environmental information across scientific disciplines and to the public through outreach efforts. In my role as Program Manager of Kids Making Sense, I coordinate projects with teachers, schools, and community groups. I lead business development, program implementation, social media efforts, curriculum development, and teacher trainings, and work with tribes and community groups to develop specifically tailored learning modules. Additionally, I work with the EPA to create learning modules for their sensor library loan programs. Previously, I was a Staff Researcher at UC San Diego’s Center for Aerosol Impacts on Chemistry of the Environment (CAICE). I also worked as the Center’s Education, Outreach, and Diversity Coordinator, to plan, coordinate, manage, and evaluate activities related to formal and informal education, public relations, and diversity initiatives. I used my skills in science communication and technical workshop planning to integrate laboratory technology and experiments into outreach demonstrations and community engagement efforts. I also planned and ran the Center’s summer research program for undergraduates. My graduate work included field and laboratory studies that investigated the impact of particle chemical composition on reactive trace gas uptake to ambient aerosol particles, especially in coastal environments. I used gas and particle phase instrumentation to explore the role aerosol composition plays in impacting daytime air quality and NOx and ozone budgets. For these efforts, I was awarded three years of full funding through a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship. I am co-author of 15 peer-reviewed publications and has presented numerous works at scientific conferences, and chaired a session on community monitoring at the Air & Waste Management Association’s 2022 Air Quality Measurement Methods and Technology Conference in San Diego, California.

Listed skills include Chemistry, Mass Spectrometry, Science, Research, and 19 others.

Bertram Research Group--National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program Recipient--Researched as Center for Impact of Aerosols on Climate and the Environment (CAICE)My graduate student career involved designing and performing experiments to measure the heterogeneous reaction kinetics of N2O5 on both ambient/field and laboratory-generated aerosol particles. For this work, I utilized a chemical ionization mass spectrometry coupled to custom designed flow reactors, and compared the results with box model outputs and co-located measurements to further understand the findings. Additionally I acquired skills in oxidation chemistry, LabVIEW, Matlab programming, and Igor. I frequently used aerosol sizing instruments (scanning particle mobility sizer, aerodynamic particle sizer, Ultra-High Sensitivity Aerosol Spectrometer), and gas phase monitoring instruments to measure ambient levels of ozone and nitrogen oxides. I was responsible for the critical analysis of my data and presenting the data to the scientific community at numerous conferences, to the public at outreach events and to government agencies. Further, I was responsible for planning, executing, and managing numerous research projects involving groups of graduate students and postdoctoral scholars, ensuring that as a team we met the project objectives by the established deadline.
