  • Epfl (École Polytechnique Fédérale De Lausanne)
    Phd Candidate
Epfl (École Polytechnique Fédérale De Lausanne) Sep 2015 - Jan 2020
    Lausanne Area, Switzerland
My research focus on Energy Management of Smart-Buildings, toward their integration into the Smart-Grid. Together with researchers at the ELAB, we have developed open-source software solutions for Smart-Building behavior emulation and Smart-Building energy management. I also investigate local and cooperative optimization of energy resources at the level of communities, in a decentralized way enabled by Blockchain.
  • Epfl (École Polytechnique Fédérale De Lausanne)
    Semester Projects Assistant
Epfl (École Polytechnique Fédérale De Lausanne) Sep 2015 - Dec 2018
    Lausanne Area, Switzerland
Throughout my PhD studies, I had to manage semester projects (10 ECTS) for master students in Energy Management and Sustainability. Starting from the conception of short research projects, I then had to drive the students through the journey of literature review, project development, and results analysis. On average, I had to micro-manage 2 students per semester, imposing weekly meetings and also providing technical support. All the projects were related to my broad topic of research: Smart-Building energy modelling, Machine Learning methods to infer building occupancy, Model Predictive Controlled applied to thermostatically-controlled multi-room building, Deferrable Load optimization algorithms, Smart-Building user interface connected to the ELAB BMS, Smart-Building integration in the Smart-Grid via a decentralized algorithm implemented via blockchain, etc.

  • Berkeley Lab
    Visiting Researcher
    Berkeley Lab May 2018 - Oct 2018
    San Francisco Bay Area
In the frame of my PhD studies, I worked for 6 month on various projects in the team of Rich Brown and Marco Prittoni, in the Energy Technology Area division. The main project called Solar+ Optimizer consisted in developing a comprehensive software for managing the energy of retail stores in California; my contribution was to deeply analyse the Demand Response programs - available or future - in California and implement the building-grid link through the protocol OpenADR. Side projects consisted in analyzing a specific emerging Demand Response program at the CAISO level and other TOU and RTP tariffs. This visiting opportunity helped me to deeply understand the current stakes of existing Demand Response programs, with a focus of a state that pledged to become 100% carbon-free by 2045.
