About Omar Nasr

A life long learner and systems builder. I am from Suez, the entry point to Suez Canal that connects the world together. Graduated in 2003 from Cairo university, I was appointed as a Teaching Assistant at Cairo University. I love teaching and systems building, and still. I worked in two companies working to implement Speech Coding algorithms in the two years after I graduated. My MSc thesis topic was in speech coding. I traveled to California in 2006 for my PhD at UCLA. I worked in a startup during my PhD. It was amazing to go to parks, streets, riding fast on the road with our wireless system to see the real system's performance. It is not only about theory and simulation, seeing systems working and observing their behavior is the key for understanding and improvement.Returned back to Egypt in December 2009 as an assistance professor at Cairo University. I joined the R&D department in National Telecom Regulatory Authority, the top Telecom authority in Egypt, few months after that. I helped in initiating a program to fund tens of projects in different Egyptian Universities. Hundreds of professors and research assistances generated high quality research papers and theses out of these projects. I was responsible for a big part of evaluation, selection, and technical follow-up of these projects. They covered a wide range of topics in technology. Smart Grids, Software Defined Networks, Software Defined Radios, Multimedia Understanding, Cellular Networks Optimization are among the topics of these projects. This gives me a big exposure to different topics. I was also a team member that funded tens of students’ activities throughout Egypt. Hundreds of thousands of students participated in these events. I then joined Goodix, a multinational company working in chip design. I worked there for 2 years as a principal systems Engineer working in advanced wireless systems. In 2020, when Covid-19 hit the world, there was a huge issue in conducting exams. People find ways to give sessions like using Zoom and Teams. However, online exams lack credibility. We built AI-Proctor to guarantee the integrity of online assessments. We built it from scratch, we sold it to the top private university in Southeast Asia after one year of the start of development, and in Feb 2022, we were selected by Flat6labs, the top incubator and early-stage investor in Egypt, to be in their portfolio. Currently AI-Proctor has been used in tens of thousands of exams and enabling online education to be a credible alternative. I am very proud of this!
