Olympic Softworks is an educational nonprofit I started with the intent to leverage open source software to teach and as a vehicle to refurbish donated computers so they could used then give away some of them to people in our two target communities, and sell the rest to fund the work.The refurbishing was challenging to keep reasonable quality control on the machines we'd refurbish. Most went to the dump, but about 1/3 could be sanitized(digital and otherwise) and have Linux installed onto them fully so they could be be donated or sold.I utilized the local outlet of a Freeskool, to teach a class every week. Alternating between a basic 'user' class(safety/security, email, word processing, photo management, etc.. And a more advanced 'dev' class. I was already well on my way to expert-level Linux use, and I am an accomplished programmer, so I combined my skill sets open source technology to give back as community service to help people.- Teaching and public speaking as open source advocate and computer expert.- In order to better facilitate the questions I was being asked, I had to be ahead of the lesson plans and have sundry data for questions and comments.- This provided me excellent overall IT service-desk type experience, communication, planning, research, plus I expected the nonprofit to pay for itself eventually and then some.- Topics I have taught:- - Desktop and text shell use- - Digital Security on the Internet- - Office Productivity- - OS installation on various hardware configurations with different Linux distributions- - Audio/Video/Graphic production software- - Virtual machines- - Coding and scripting with BASH, C++, BASIC, HTML,Machine Language- - Troubleshooting methods for hardware and software issuesOlympic Softworks these days is a new YouTube channel.
