During my four years as a student at University of Portland, I studied psychology for three of them. Outside of the classroom, I gained experience and knowledge through jobs and informational interviews. I worked for OHSU as a student researcher for the psychology department for four months, and also as a direct care staff for Janus Youth for almost two years. One job gave me experience working in a lab situation and how to do data entry and data cleaning. The other gave me experience working directly with people and building relationships over time with clients. Inside the classroom, courses I took helped me narrow my career focus: Sex and Society (PSY) and Positive Psychology (PSY) were two of the courses that convinced me I want to be a Marriage and Family Therapist after going to grad school. The emphasis of these classes on the impact of family and other relationships, combined with my experience working with youth who often come from difficult family situations, is what narrowed my career goal in the last year of college.
