About Owen Ryan
I am a senior level Electrical Engineering major at WSU with classes focused on ASIC and VLSI design, Power Electronics, RF and Microwave Circuits, and Fundamentals of Digital Systems. I was previously apart of the WSU Space Club, where I assisted in building a cube-sat. I previously worked at Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL), where I was a Hardware Engineering Intern. I worked on the testing of products and development of circuit boards inside of SEL devices. I worked in the office at SEL headquarters in Pullman. SEL is in the electric power industry focused on the protection, automation, and control of all parts of the grid. I became familiar with this industry and the way they test and exceeds standards set by IEEE and IEC in all of there products. The most exciting thing about working here is the culture of SEL. Similarly to Crane A&E, the manufacturing is done on site, which I find incredibly valuable. This experience has allowed me to deepen my understanding of hardware design and testing processes, while expanding my knowledge of industry standards and compliance.I had a previous Internship as an Electrical Engineering Intern with Crane Aerospace & Electronics in Lynnwood, Washington. When working here I automated a compliance test using standard lab equipment and NI LabVIEW. Crane A&E is a supplier for aerospace and defense applications, focused on sensing, motor control, and power conversion. I learned a lot about how compliance testing is conducted in this industry, specifically governed by the Radio Technical Commission for Aeronautics (RTCA) standards and the Military Standard (MIL-STD). I thought that the manufacturing of products done on site was impressive and nice to see. This experience has provided me with a foundational understanding of hardware design and testing processes, while introducing me to industry standards and compliance.

Hardware Engineering Intern
Managed multiple part change requests due to end-of-life status, or has limitations related to country of origin. This involved identifying suitable replacement parts, either by locating alternatives from competitors or updated versions from the same manufacturer through detailed datasheet comparisons. Conducted signal integrity tests for ICs like logic gates and shift registers for parameters such as rise and fall times, overshoot, undershoot, skew, propagation delay, and jitter using an oscilloscope, while also evaluating performance across varying temperatures. Performed passive component analysis using an impedance analyzer, focusing on parameters such as equivalent series resistance (ESR) and self-resonant frequency, ensuring optimal component performance. Additionally, conducted type testing for radiated and conducted immunity and emissions to verify compatibility with system requirements and regulatory standards.Contributed to the development of products undergoing functional and type testing, including tests for temperature, burden, electromagnetic compatibility, surge, damped oscillatory wave, vibration, electrostatic discharge, and high potential testing. Assisted in setup with technicians and collaborated with engineers on document creation and writing.Programmed SEL computers and RTACs for tests using the SEL programs RTAC, Diagram Builder, and Quickset. Programmed using the structured text language in AcSELerator RTAC, created human machine interfaces using AcSELerator Diagram Builder, and modified device settings using AcSELerator Quickset.I gained experience working with agile methodologies, including participating in sprints. This involved collaborating with multi-disciplinary teams to develop and refine products, manage backlogs, and achieve project milestones. My role included daily stand-ups, retrospectives, and sprint planning. Additionally I used a document management system with branching and merging version control similar to GitHub.
Electrical Engineering Intern
Developed an program using NI LabView, and lab equipment such as oscilloscopes, signal generators, amplifiers, and transformers to automate an electromagnetic compatibility test. The test I automated was the audio frequency conducted susceptibility test as outlined in RTCA-DO160, and MIL-STD 461. Developing this test provided me with the foundation of compliance testing, and how important it is.Along with this, I also performed signal integrity tests and measured parameters like rise/fall, and overshoot and undershoot. I also performed fanout analysis to ensure that logic gates can drive all the connected gates, to ensure proper reliability.
