About Owen Mccarty

I recently graduated from the Temple University College of Engineering with a BS in mechanical engineering. In my time at Temple I played a pivotal role in the success of Temple Formula Racings 2021, 2022, and 2023 competition results. After getting my feet wet in suspension theory in my sophomore year, aiding in the design of the first 10” wheel race car at Temple; it wouldn’t be until the following year that the R&D I lead-on would shine through with the greatest race car Temple has every produced. Eventually to be followed again by a third car which would break the record of the previous.In 2022 I lead the suspension team to decrease the wheel base and track width, reducing lateral and longitudinal load transfer, increasing spring rates and inherently the F/R ride rates, all with a goal of achieving target normal and lateral loads on the four tires in several driving scenarios. This design fundamentally changed every component of the suspension including all kinematic ingredients, and every chassis and wheel mounting locations. Every element from the steering wheel down to the tires were completely re-evaluated. This yielded the greatest results in Temple History placing 29th overall at FSAE Michigan. The following year would mitigate smaller concerns such as suspension compliance and adjustability. Moving all 2 force members and rockers into single plane of motion, and mounting rockers in double shear as appose to the previous single shear used due to packaging constraints in 2022. The addition of front and rear sway bars would also allow the engineers an infinite amount of adjustment to help balance the car in cornering per the drivers feedback. This car would prove to be the most competitive yet, finishing 24th overall out of 121 registered schools at the same competition. This is my single most prized accomplishment by far.

As the first rotational engineer at Dorman Products, I am pioneering the way for future engineering development at Dorman Products. The program is designed for a 2 year duration involving 4 rotations broken into 6 month intervals. In the two years of rotations, I will be exposed to dimensional benchmarking methodology using precision metrology devices, destructive performance testing using our on site test equipment. I will work with the mechanical design team to develop my CAD and 3D printing knowledge, and will ultimately spend my last year split between two engineering business units where I will hone these skills further.

Reverse engineering top tier automotive aftermarket parts through successful team collaboration. Using skills in GD&T and a well developed understanding of critical components amongst a variety of automotive parts, the engineer creates a design specification based on OE part specs and industry standards. When parts are manufactured, they are received by the engineer where they are tested according to the standards that apply, and either passed or failed accordingly. Parts will repeat the process until successful.
