During my PhD I have undertaken extensive independent research, written scientific review articles in collaboration with members of my lab and presented my work at conferences.

Polygeia is a student-run Global Health think tank with branches in Cambridge, Oxford, Londonand New York. Each year teams of undergraduate and graduate students work on health-relatedresearch projects (some of which are commissioned by NGOs and government bodies) to producewritten reports which are then presented at the Polygeia conference in September and sometimespublished in relevant journals.As head of training for Cambridge branch, I worked with the training officers from other branches to develop training workshops on topics such as literature searches, critical analysis of journal articles, policy writing and public speaking. I then delivered a series of workshops to the ∼40 researchers working in the Cambridge branch. Feedback from the sessions was overwhelmingly positive. Researchers especially praised how the sessions encouraged co-operation and the relevance of the session topics to their work in Polygeia.

Worked for twelve weeks under Dr Anthony Hall at the University of Liverpool’s Institute of Inte-grative Biology. During the studentship I worked to create an apparatus capable of capturing images of seedlings growing in complete darkness. I created software and designed a work-flow which allowed these images to be compiled into time-lapse ‘stacks’ which could then be analysed to study circadian aspects of the switch from skotomorphogenesis to photomorphogenesis.The project developed my knowledge and experience of techniques used to study circadian rhythms(e.g. leaf movement, luciferase assays). I also learnt how to create sophisticated computer pro-grammes capable of controlling many peripheries in a synchronised, efficient manner.
