A few years later at Skate America in Ontario, Calif. I transcribed press conferences and photographed athletes in the kiss and cry area. At the 2018 U.S. Figure Skating Championships in San Jose, which also served as the Olympic trials, I escorted athletes to their media interviews.

I participated in APTRA Academy, an annual two-day intensive news reporting bootcamp in Calabasas. It is run by Fox11's Hal Eisner. He assembles a group of stellar mentors who graciously volunteer their time each year to teach their craft to aspiring MMJs and anchors. News directors, agents, reporters, anchors, photographers, assignment editors, and more act as the mentors to offer us students valuable education and insight into all areas of the news business from various, diverse perspectives. Hal also enlists the help of LAPD, Anaheim Police, LACFD, and LAX PIOs to stage a major news event that unfolds during the first portion of the workshop. We attended mock press conferences, asked questions, and took notes to piece together the breaking news. Then, we wrote a script, recorded a standup and voiceovers, and our photog edited our packages.
