About Pam Mclean, Ph.D.

I was there in the beginning when coaching was an emerging field. Now, two decades later I am even more passionate about the profound power of coaching. I am proud to lead the Hudson Institute, a coaching organization that develops great leaders, ones who make a difference in the lives of others at all levels in an organization. I’ve always had an interest in human development and studying what it takes for a person to be at their best in good as well as challenging times. My interest began as a practicing clinical psychologist and has evolved into the field of leadership coaching. At Hudson, I work with leaders who want to succeed in today’s workplace and be their best for the people they lead. Coaching provides a leader with an opportunity to press the pause button and discern what new areas of development might serve them.I view coaching as neither a problem-solving technique nor a ‘tell and fix’ approach to leadership development. Instead, I believe this approach provides an opportunity for leaders to identify small changes that will allow them to lead at their very best. Coaching is about change and change is challenging territory for the best of us. What I have experienced is that coaching has a powerful impact, touching leaders at all levels in an organization. When I step away from work you can find me in my kitchen cooking, outside enjoying nature, and spending time with family and friends. I love to travel the world, exploring and experiencing other cultures, customs and foods. Most recently I traveled to Spain, Portugal and the Czech Republic. Self as Coach, Self as Leader focuses on the concept of use of self as instrument—a key dimension in the practice of developmental coaching. While remedial, tactical or performance-based coaching may be sufficient to aid the client over the short term, developmental coaching places emphasis on the whole person. This innovative approach supplies coaches and leaders who are called upon to coach with a roadmap for exploring their internal landscape to strengthen the use of self as the most important tool in coaching. Along the way, both coaches and leaders will learn how to strengthen and harness the six broad dimensions integral to great coaching and great leadership—presence, empathy, range of feelings, boundaries and systems, embodiment, and courage. As coaches and leaders, we need this roadmap to make the very best use of ourselves as our most important resource. To make the leap from good enough to truly great. To explore what’s below the surface. To transform us as leaders and do our best work.

I have been the leader of the Hudson organization over the past two decades. Hudson is one of the earliest coach services organization in the US. Founded in 1986 the Hudson Institute of Coaching has certified over 1,500 great leaders to be even greater coaches! Hudson is an extraordinary community of coaches actively engaged in their ongoing learning around the globe. In addition to professional coach training, our work includes Coach Supervision and a Master Coach Program.In our corporate work, we provide a complete suite of coaching services for organizations serving all levels of leadership from the early manager to the seasoned C-Suite executive.
