In my current position I have three major responsibilities - lead research projects in cancer prevention and early detection, support countries to plan and implement cancer control programmes better, and mentor scientists at and outside IARC. I am the principal investigator (PI) of several research projects, which include an ongoing cohort study in India aiming to compare the efficacy of single dose of HPV vaccine to that of two and three doses, a randomized study in Zambia aiming to compare the efficacy of thermal evaluation to cryotherapy and LLETZ technique to treat cervical precancers in a high HIV prevalent population, an implementation research study aiming to improve uptake of cervical cancer screening among vulnerable women in the European Union, a study aimed at developing a scalable, woman-centred model for cervical cancer screening in vulnerable women in India, and CanScreen5 project that aims to collect information on characteristics and performance of cancer screening programmes across the globe and disseminate the same for improved programme management. These projects are funded by Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, NCI/NIH of the USA, European Commission, National Health & Medical Research Council of Australia, Medical Research Council of the UK and others. Our team at IARC directly engages with the Ministry of Health of different countries (mostly low and middle income countries) to support them to evaluate their cancer early detection programmes, draft cancer control plans, and provide strategic guidance for implementation. One of my key activities in this area is to develop learning resources and help countries to organise training of master-trainers. I am the chief coordinator of the Comprehensive Learning Programme on Cervical Cancer Screening and Management being developed in collaboration with the WHO Academy.

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) is the specialised cancer agency of the World Health Organisation established by a resolution of the World Health Assembly in the year 1965. The objectives and core functions of the screening group of IARC are to provide data on the accuracy, reproducibility, efficacy, benefits, harms and cost-effectiveness of different screening interventions for cervical, oral, breast and other cancers, in reducing deaths and in improving quality of life in different settings, leading to rational utilization of health care resources. The ultimate objective is to guide the development of public health policies in implementing screening in a range of health care settings, particularly in low- and medium-resourced countries. To achieve this objective, the group conducts several research projects world-wide in collaboration with national institutions and investigators.

Brief description of duties and responsibilities:1. Providing diagnostic, therapeutic and follow up services to the patients registered at the Department of Gynecological Oncology of the 210 bedded National Cancer Institute. In the year 2013, the number of new patients registered under my care was 1125 and the number of patients attending the out-patients for follow up visits was 6482.2. Conducting clinical research aimed at evaluating new diagnostic and therapeutic modalities, which have potential to improve survival and/or reduce complications of treatment for gynecological cancers. The focus areas of my research are prophylactic and therapeutic vaccines for cervical cancer, secondary prevention of cervical cancer through screening and novel therapeutic interventions for cervical and ovarian cancers. I am the Principal Investigator for 11 ongoing and 7 completed research studies in the Department3. Planning new research projects and applying for extra-mural funding from various national and international funding agencies and develop research partnership with industry4. Teaching students and fellows enrolled for post-graduate courses in surgical oncology, gynaecological oncology and radiation oncology, PhD in clinical oncology and PhD in life sciences. I am examiner for MCh Oncology course.5. Administrative responsibilities to ensure smooth running and upgradation of various services. I am closely involved with the expansion program of the Institute to setup the new 500 bedded oncology hospital. I have been member of Human Research Ethics Committee, Academic Committee, Hospital Development Committee and Purchase Committee of the Institute.6. Being member of various Task Forces and Advisory Committees of Government of India to implementnational cancer control program, introduce new academic courses in oncology and improve researchcapabilities in India
