About Pascal Van Wijk
Since 2019 residing in Eindhoven. Very enthusiastic about writing and publishing articles, both on an academic level and also casually. Therefore, considering doing a PhD and looking to continue this spirit in an R&D department seeking chemists in The Netherlands or Germany, since lately, I have been trying to sharpen my German linguistics again.I was born and raised in the region of Utrecht, The Netherlands. In terms of free time, I am currently involved in the cycling, squash, and table tennis association at TU Eindhoven, and I was a former field hockey player in IJsselstein. Since a young age, I have been a cycling enthusiast, both on a city bike and a racing bike. From 2012 onward I started to play the drums, which secured a spot in the blues/rock band '4Street' (IJsselstein) in 2017 up until the present, often performing in bars in The Netherlands. See https://4streetblues.nl/. This effectively means I am often in the region of Utrecht during the weekends.

Teaching Staff
Includes guidance in the transition from primary to secondary school, homework assistance, exam training for secondary schools, and assisting teachers in graded assessments such as debates or written exams. In my years at Plus Woensel and my year as a student mentor, it became clear to me that I like to explain, present, and work with youth. In September 2023, I also realized that I might pursue a PhD at a university. Part of this program is dedicated to tutoring and education: therefore I wanted some experience without following an entire university track. Thus, I applied at Lyceo, which provides services to secondary schools. Up until the present, I have given exam training in Dordrecht, Vught, Utrecht, Den Bosch, and Eindhoven; and helped students with the transition from primary to lower general secondary education in Geldrop, in which these students required additional high grades to stay at said school. I also helped in a graded Dutch debate and took single shifts in guiding final-year primary school students across the Netherlands. Working at Lyceo is very flexible and does not require a minimum of hours. Very useful for a university schedule.
Committee Work - Writing & Designing
T-Licht (university magazine) - September 2022 - presentFunction: Editorial BoardT-Licht is a magazine for the Department of Chemical Engineering & Chemistry in Eindhoven. The editorial board creates content, checks the content for spelling errors, and makes the design in Adobe InDesign. The subjects are most of the time chemistry-related but this is not mandatory. I try to handle typical products that we encounter daily, explaining the chemical mechanisms, and writing with a witty, satirical tone.Lustrum Book Committee – September 2022 – January 2024Function: Head of designStudy associations celebrate a lustrum every five years. In 2022-2023, it was time for the 65th birthday of ‘T.S.V. Jan Pieter Minckelers’, and, traditionally this is accompanied by a lustrum book. All of the experiences of the past five years are highlighted and internal committees, external parties, other study associations, and individuals who have a good relationship with the association are invited to provide a piece. Similar to my work at T-Licht, I provided the reader with my nice writing style and design.
Committee Work - Organizing
ExcurCie (travel committee) – September 2021 – September 2022Function: SecretaryThis new committee turned out to be a quite difficult year for there were plenty of coronavirus measures. Officially, the budget allowed two day trips and a weekend. One of the day trips should have visited CORPUS, Hortus Botanicus, and a city tour through Leiden, but got canceled because of illness. The other day trip, to The Hague, did continue. We visited Madurodam, Escher museum, organized a scavenger hunt through the city, and ended at Scheveningen. For the weekend, there were plans to visit the south of Limburg and provide participants with cave visits, a trip to the mining museum, and the observatory. Unfortunately, not enough people signed up. For my function, the main responsibility was planning the activities, contacting companies, and arranging tickets. This is of course most of the work of a travel committee.Gouden Loper Festival committee (Craft Beer Festival) - September 2020 -September 2021Function: ChairmanThe Gouden Loper Festival is a one-day festival, on a Friday somewhere around June, in which craft beer brewers from all across the Netherlands, sometimes even beyond, come to Eindhoven Technical University. The event is accessible to anyone who buys a ticket, but a large proportion of visitors is related to the university itself. Together with three other students, we started the planning in a year when events weren’t taking place at all: the coronavirus period. As a chairman, this forced me to keep morale high, but near the actual date, the measures of the government forced a cancellation. I was the main point of contact, also with the university regarding water/electricity/gas connections and the municipality for the correct permits. I also provided the festival terrain planning, in its many forms that we had prepared. I have volunteered in the previous editions and will continue to do so in the upcoming years.
Student Mentorship
As a student mentor, one is responsible for approximately ten first-year students in Chemical Engineering & Chemistry. You try to familiarize this group with one another during the Introduction Week at the Eindhoven University of Technology, giving them a solid base for their first year. Moreover, you will guide and inform students about opportunities and choices at the university. Also, topics like social safety and pressure to perform are discussed. It is also mandatory to host individual talks with students, in which you also make a study plan together. In this year a lot of students were international, so you also played a role in introducing them to the country.
Grocery Store Executive
The atmosphere in Plus J. Schimmel was very pleasant. Plus Woensel was in the vicinity of my new home, and the allocation of products is similar in nearly every store. So it was an easy transition. The main office of Plus had jurisdiction over this location, whereas a lot of supermarkets in the Netherlands are ‘privately owned’. This store is relatively large, revenue-wise, but subsequently also has a lot of costs, causing the main office to push for cost savings. This put a lot of pressure on the employees, and approaching 2022 also added a giant shortage of employees (a general trend in the Netherlands). Responsibility, without any back-up, was surely tested due to the vibrant nature of the area. This was done alongside my studies, therefore I was an executive in the evenings and weekends. I also had the final say/responsibility of all store departments but mainly focused on shelf stocking. In 2021 I played a large role in a renovation of the store. It was a good experience of leadership.
Grocery Store Employee
This was my first real team job. Initially, I was hired as a bread baker, but it was mutually agreed to move me to stocking shelves, in which I grew into a respected employee. After a few years, I often was the executive’s right hand. In this job, I socially grew a lot. The bosses encouraged conversation with customers which was very much doable in this nice neighborhood.
Small Side Jobs
As a younger adolescent, I volunteered at two events: IJsselsteinloop (building of the event, operating stand), and festival Geinbeat (building of the event) in Nieuwegein. I also had small jobs in newspaper and mail delivery, in which long distances, times and large freights were common on a bicycle. Mentality-wise an important period for me.
