About Peter Pastore Iii

I learned to play the game of chess when I was eight years old from my grandfather. When I began, it was nothing more than an “old man’s game” that I would never willingly think of again. I still remember the constant disheartening feeling of hearing his cheerful cry, “Checkmate!” It seemed like no matter what I did, I ended up cornered with nowhere to go, and it became a mindless, never-ending cycle.Two years later, the roles were reversed, and I finally put his untouched white king into a multi-sided checkmate. Reflecting on that experience is something I will never forget as I continue into my early collegiate and professional life. In my recent endeavors, I have seen this principle in real-life action, reminding me of the power that one win can hold, as no future failure will be the same as before the first win.Hello, my name is Peter Pastore. I am a pre-business student and Spanish minor at the University of South Carolina. If you couldn’t tell by now, I know what it feels like to be continuously checkmated. The difference between the present 18-year-old me and my 8-year-old self is that I now invite checkmates into my life. Suppose there is one takeaway from this story of mine. In this case, it is the realization that if my grandpa didn't go easy on an elementary schooler in a board game, then no one will under any circumstances. Therefore, no matter how farfetched, there is no reason to stop taking some leaps of faith in this new chapter.
