My mentors were Dr. Thomas Aldcroft, Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, Prof. Marten van Kerkwijk, University of Toronto, and Dr. Moritz Guenther, MIT Kavli Institute for Astrophysics and Space Research. The aim of my project "A mixin protocol for seamless interoperability" was to solve the issue of storing time coordinates in the FITS World Coordinate System, which has been open since September 2014. Not only did I solve the three-year old issue, but I also implemented nearly the full FITS time standard in Astropy, a feature not yet supported by any other software. I developed a protocol to write and read time values in the FITS format without any loss of data and/or attributes, and added a generalised read feature to interpret time from a large subset of the astronomical datasets (Chandra, XMM, HST, etc.).I am now one of the core contributors to Astropy. Research Intern
During the summer of 2016, I worked under the supervision of Dr. Kaustubh Vaghmare, Data Scientist at IUCAA, on a research project that automated the estimation of distance to star clusters. Subsequently, I was invited to deliver a lecture on astronomical photometry and the research project at IUCAA by the Astronomy Club, Antariksh, of Vishwakarma Institute of Technology (VIT), Pune.
