Dr. Patrick Bixler is an assistant professor at the LBJ School of Public Affairs with a joint appointment in the Community and Regional Planning program in the School of Architecture. His interdisciplinary appointment contributes to the work of Planet Texas 2050 and he serves as a core faculty member of the RGK Center for Philanthropy and Community Service. His current research focuses on climate and environmental governance, urban sustainability and resilience, hazard preparedness and response, and network science. He is particularly interested in how public, private and nonprofit institutions collaborate to solve complex social and environmental problems and promote social innovation. Through his research and teaching he emphasizes the importance and impact of civic and community engagement. He co-leads a Planet Texas 2050 Flagship Project and leads the Austin Area Sustainability Indicators project, which won the 2020 Community Impact Award from the Community Indicator Consortium. His research has recently been published in Cities, Current Opinion in Environmental Sustainability, Environmental Science and Policy, Sustainability and Nonprofit Policy Forum.

An emerging body of research indicates that specific structural properties (e.g. patterns, strength of ties, and content of relations) are important for delivering natural resource conservation outcomes. Moreover, certain network qualities create opportunities while others create constraints for the delivery of science and policy to on-the-ground management and practitioners. Collaborative Stewardship Solutions helps organizations engaged in conservation and natural resource management to design, build, and refine its collaborative approach in a deliberate and strategic manner that responds to these research insights. Networks can be studied with a great deal of analytical precision describing underlying patterns of social structure, and social network analysis describes those patterns (network structure) and the impact of those patterns on relationships (network ties) towards achieving network goals.

As a research faculty associate in the Ecosystem Workforce Program I will focus on the intersection of ecology, economy, and governance across a range of issues relevant to forest disturbance and western public lands management. This includes (1) community and collaborative responses to mountain pine beetle outbreaks in the context of climate change, (2) local consequences of wildfire suppression policies and strategies in large wildfires, (3) collaborative and economic capacity building performance measures for the USFS, and (4) meta-analysis of Collaborative Forest Landscape Restoration research.
