About Patrick Bixler

Never in history have we stood where we do now, with the knowledge, technology, and power to fundamentally alter the social and ecological processes upon which we rely. Our collective knowledge is unprecedented, yet our ability to utilize this knowledge in effective forms of governance has proven out of reach. It is not enough to simply do more of what we’ve been doing; we need to do it differently. To this end, I’m a sociologist that studies the ways that we collectively organize ourselves to govern our social and environmental worlds. I am particularly interested in the role of social capital – the value of the resources embedded in networks – in achieving collective impact. I apply this perspective to a range of critical public policy and nonprofit challenges and sectors. Over 50 published articles appear in numerous social science and environmental science journals on topics of urban governance and resilience, land and water management, climate adaptation, residential development, and urban resilience. I lead the Austin Area Sustainability Indicators (A2SI), co-lead the Planet Texas 2050 flagship project Networks for Hazard Preparedness and Response, and currently receive funding from NASA, Dept. of Energy, National Science Foundation, US Fish and Wildlife Service, and local and state agencies.
