I am honoured to be invited to lead this course for the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, having been a faculty member for many years, and used much of this experience to inform my dissertation on reflective practice for my MSc in Medical Education. This is a very unique faculty that seeks out the best tutors, many of whom may be surgeons, but celebrates diversity of training, experience and background, and not afraid to embrace and welcome everybody, regardless of training or specialty interest. I am proud of my continued association with RCSEd.

Following a masterclass in 2013, I was invited to join the faculty of TTT. I have taught on the 2-day course aimed at senior registrars and consultants who teach and train junior doctors, and also the 1-day course aimed at more early years trainees.The topics that I have specifically taught include:- Education Theory and fundamentals- How to give an effective presentation- Small-group teaching- Feedback- Dealing with colleagues in difficulty (be it trainee, trainer, or indeed the training system itself)- Techniques for teaching- Obstacles and how to overcome them- Supervision of micro-teaching sessions, and- Open Space Technology, and running an open space session.

Broad Based Training is a 2-year program where trainee doctors rotate through 6 months in each of GP, Medicine, Psychiatry and Paediatrics. They are often choosing between two (or more) of these as a possible career, and this gives them time & experience to assist their career planning. When they exit into their chosen discipline, they get a year's credit for time spent in this BBT program, entering ST2 in their chosen discipline. Some trainees opt a completely different specialty, but they too benefit from the range of generalism encountered.There are 7 Health Boards in Scotland where this is run - Ayrshire & Arran, Dumfries & Galloway, Greater Glasgow & Clyde, Grampian, Highland, Lanarkshire and Tayside. This BBT program is also run in Northern Ireland (and I am happy to connect interested trainees with the TPD and team there).

34 beds (2 HDU) Rural General Hospital, with an ITU 70 miles away in Inverness. I worked a 1-in-3 on-call pattern on weekdays, and 1-in-4 weekends (72+ hours: Fri 08:30 - Mon mid-morning). The catchment population is 22,500 (census data) but with summer & winter tourism, it is 60,000 for about 10 months of the year (coincidentally the population of Inverness, the nearest referral centre for tertiary care). There was no middle grade doctor (registrar) so trainees (max 3 years post qualification) escalated directly to consultant - which was a fantastic teaching and training opportunity for them. 14-16,000 A&E attendances, of which 1500-2000 will be children. There was no dedicated A&E doctor, so physician, surgeon (and anaesthetist) share this workload here, frequently jointly.Home to the highest mountain in the UK, Ben Nevis, and with 2 ski-resorts on our door step (Nevis Range and Glencoe) and lots of hills, it is hardly surprising that 80% of all mountain rescues in Scotland happen in our area, and feed into the hospital. Safe to say it was never boring!

2 sessions per week (1 full day) of unselected General Practice

I supervised final year medical students (2 at a time) on their 8-week surgical placement as part of their final year in the University of Aberdeen's Medical School curriculum. In our rural location, we have to have a wide variety of general skills to ensure we can approach any medical or surgical problem, especially in an emergency. These students are almost at the end of their curriculum and are about to make the transition to being a qualified doctor. On their placement with us, we push them towards that role (with close supervision) - it is time for them to step up and start performing like the doctor that they are going to be. Feedback remains excellent.I was a regular examiner for the Final MB clinical OSCE.

I supervised final year medical students on their medical placement block. They are exposed to a wide variety of general internal medicine, both acute presentations and chronic disease management. Students are often surprised at the variety of different conditions they are exposed to, and some of the rarities that we see, despite our small size and remote location.Our philosophy is that final year medical students should now be thinking and acting as if they were newly qualified doctors, not waiting until somebody hands them a scroll and congratulates them. So, rather than thinking "in this condition, we do 'x' as first line therapy", they should be thinking "I will consider 'x' and 'y' as possible diagnosis, and my initial investigations and plan will be 1,2,3..."I examined regularly for the Final MB OSCE examination for the University.

I was an elected member of council, as co-chair of the Recently Appointed Consultants Committee.

I was the remote and rural advisor to council representing physicians in these locations in the UK.

I regularly examined candidates sitting the final part of the MRCP exam, the Practical Assessment of Clinical Examination Skills (PACES). In addition, I hosted and ran the examination annually for several years in Belford Hospital, Fort William.In October 2017 I was honoured to represent the Edinburgh College examining candidates in Kuwait, alongside local examiners from Kuwait, and consultant colleagues from our sister colleges in Glasgow and London.

With a colleague, I founded this business providing revision courses for medical students. We ran courses in the UK and were invited to run them in the UAE also, 26 in total with over 1500 students cumulative attendance.In addition to lectures consolidating knowledge, the course was unique in providing small group tutorials for the students to practice their presenting skills. This allowed immediate, personalised feedback to the student to instil and build confidence.From 2009, we used profits to fund 2 national prizes, for students and Foundation Year doctors (first two years post qualification).

Company Number 05605830. Incorporated 2006, Dissolved 2011.A company of GPs, Hospital Doctors, and NHS staff, this was set up as a provider option under Practice Based Commissioning. I was company secretary and a founding shareholder.

My clinical areas of responsibility were Respiratory, Diabetes, Paediatrics, Women’s Health and Clinical Governance (including training and updates for all staff). My management roles included running the entire Quality an Outcomes Framework (QOF). Since assuming this role, the practice consistently met all Government Targets, scoring maximum points on these. I set up training in Long-acting Reversible Contraception (LARC) insertion and removal for two doctors in the practice in order to offer this service to patients in the locality from 2007 onwards.I was also responsible for Patient Access and redesigned the appointments system following a consultation process. The practice also scored very highly on the annual national patient surveys (up until such time as these were abandoned, just prior to my leaving the partnership).

I was responsible for bedside clinical teaching of small groups of medical students (between 5-8 in total) through their entire clinical years up to finals in the core medical and surgical assessment skills (including paediatrics and obstetrics and gynaecology), teaching the clinical method, hypothetico-deductive reasoning, mentoring and pastoral support. I was answerable to both the School of Clinical Medicine and the Directors of Studies in each of the individual colleges. Over the 10 years I supervised 26 students in this manner from the following colleges – King’s, Clare, Emmanuel, St Edmunds, Hughes Hall, Trinity Hall, and New Hall (now called Murray Edwards College).From 2004 - 2009 I was an internal examiner for the university.

United Health was brought in to help Northamptonshire PCT. I contributed towards several business cases and in small part the Health Needs Assessment, but the majority of my time was drafting a business case for redesigning Dermatology services. My proposal would save £4million over a 3-year time frame without compromising quality of care. I presented this to the Commissioning Executive and subsequently the proposal was put to NHS Northamptonshire just before I left in June 2009.

From this post I gained leadership, management and team working skills. This post also highlighted to me, more than any before it, the value of my own skills & training as a professional. In terms of business skills, I left with an appreciation of how a billion dollar company maintains its market sector lead in a highly competitive industry.I was the sole physician for the M/S Jubilee. At capacity there were 2000 passengers & 700 crewmembers. My on-call commitment was 24-7 for the duration of the contract, the only respite being out with clinic hours if the ship was docked at port. I had a staff of three nurses in my department.This was the first time in my career where I was head of a department and ultimately responsible for those beneath me. In common with all crew, I was answerable to the Captain for Maritime discipline and safety at sea, but I could over-rule the Captain in medical emergency. I could ask for a medical opinion by the satellite phone, but I had to make the final decision. All Heads of Department attended fortnightly Captain’s Meetings. While on board, the company conducted a crew satisfaction survey, and the Infirmary staff rated highest of all.
