Program Specialist
Invasive Species Research Associate
Graduate Student Instructor
Winter semester 2018 and Fall 2018 GSI in the Evolution, Ecology, and Biology program for the course Biology 171. 16-20 hours a week requirement leading three discussion sections through introductory exercises in genetics, ecology, and evolution.
Biological Science Technician
As a part of the Early Detection and Rapid Response Program my main duties involved gps and mapping using Garmin eTrex and ArcGIS for new invasive species communities (and rapid treatment via mechanical or chemical means) as well as observed state and federal listed species in backcountry areas of the Manitou islands at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. Additionally, helped Forest Health program to catalogue and treat emerald ash borer using an Arborjet tree applicator.
Conservation Land Management Intern
As an Intern I was stationed with the Bureau of Land Management in the Twin Falls field office. My main duties were to conduct rare plant surveys using GPS and ArcGIS to set transects and identify areas of Lepidium papilliferum (slick peppergrass), an endemic and threatened species. Secondarily, we conducted quadrat and transect vegetation surveys, wetland inventory and monitoring, and cattle utilization and production measures.
Aquatic Plant Maintenance
Worked both in a team and individual setting for plant identification and maintenance of the garden’s 5 miles of native shoreline plantings. Using initial planting maps we coordinated work around 200+ native species and their planting beds, weeded for invasive species, prevented erosion through plantings, and cleaned/harvested seeds for next year's plantings. For controlling invasive species we used mechanical pulling, gloved herbicide, and horticultural vinegar.
Carbon Fellow
One of eight positions awarded to conduct interdisciplinary undergraduate research. Conducted Ecotoxicology research for the toxicity of polyethylene microspheres on aquatic invertebrate Daphnia magna. Additionally, I was responsible for measuring and adjusting water quality (pH, D.O., ammonia, nitrate/nitrite, phosphate, hardness and alkalinity), and the husbandry of fathead minnows, Florida apple snails, and Hyalella azteca.
Shoreline Maintenance
Working in a team setting, we identified invasive aquatic species, cut and harvested these species and managed the lake system. We used an electric prop motored boat to traverse the lake and identified aquatic plant species to cut and harvest. Harvested plants mainly consisted of Eurasian water milfoil, Brazilian elodea, and curly-leaf pondweed.
