My teaching duties as a college professor demand much of my time. Hours spent in the classroom necessarily follow even more hours ensuring students will get the most current information in a rapidly changing field. But professors do more than disseminate knowledge through teaching. Our scholarly activities enhance the ken of our culture. And we must help the machine that is the modern university run, grease its cogs and gears, and so we must allot time for service. Thus, I rely on my training and expertise to review others' original work. As a member of several professional organizations, I contribute my time and energy to making those organizations dynamic and interesting groups to belong to. I help my colleagues find new qualified people to join our university in educating those who come here seeking knowledge, skill, and understanding. Professors must collaborate with administrators in a process of "shared governance" to make the university a vigorous engine of knowledge generation and dissemination.Above all, I find writing and public speaking my most rewarding professional activities. Research that creates new insights must be shared. So authorship and speaking engagements garner my most intense investments of energy and time.
